A lash lift is one of the most transformative treatments in the beauty industry. It gives your clients beautifully enhanced natural lashes that look longer, fuller, and more defined. However, delivering consistently flawless results is about more than following the steps. It’s about perfecting your technique, understanding your tools, and knowing how to troubleshoot.

Step-by-Step Guide To Lash Lifts
Now you have your kit, it’s time to lift those lashes!
1. Clean the client’s lashes thoroughly with some cleaning foam, making sure you remove all makeup residue with a moist cotton swab.
Tip: Rinse the lashes with a saline solution before treatments, as the salts open the cuticles and help the solutions penetrate the hair better.
2. Prepare the natural lashes by cleansing with BELO Lash’s Whipped Dream Cleanser.
3. Check the growth direction of your client’s lashes to help you select the right size silicone shield.
Tip: Downward-growing lashes require more curling lotion and a longer processing time.
4. Cover the client’s lower lashes with a gel pad to keep them away from the top ones so they won’t get glued together.
5. Apply the silicone shields. Choose the shield size according to the length of the client's natural lashes. Also, consider the eyelid shape, lash growth direction, and the client’s desired look.
6. Comb your client’s lashes onto the shield with the lash lift tool while keeping the shield in place with your fingers. Start from the inner corner. Apply the adhesive to the shields in 5mm sections, combing the hairs upwards.
7. Apply the lifting lotion to break down the bonds in the keratin to facilitate shaping.
Tip: Apply the lifting solution from the outer corner inwards. The outer lashes are stronger and thicker, requiring more processing time to create the same amount of lift as the inner lashes.
8. Apply the fixing lotion. It neutralises the pH level of the natural lashes and restores the disulfide bonds.
9. After you’ve removed the fixing lotion, it’s time to tint the lashes.
10. Lastly, nourish your client’s freshly lifted and tinted lashes.
Advanced Techniques for a Perfect Lash Lift
You want to create a flawless lift every time, so here are some points to keep in mind.
Proper Shield Selection
Selecting the correct shield size determines the lift’s final look:
-
Small shields create a dramatic curl.
-
Medium shields are best for medium-length lashes, providing a balanced lift.
-
Large shields are ideal for long lashes or clients who prefer a natural, more elongated look.
Tip: Place the shield against the lash line and gently stretch the lashes over it. The shield is a good fit if the lashes reach the centre without pulling.
Lash Placement Precision
Even the slightest misalignment can affect the final result. For flawless placement:
-
Work in small sections. Use the tip of the lash tool to isolate and lift a few lashes at a time.
-
Ensure each lash is straight and parallel, with no overlapping or crisscrossing.
-
Apply gentle pressure on the base of the shield to keep it secure without causing the client discomfort.
Tip: Don’t use too much adhesive. Excess glue can clump the lashes, making separation more difficult.
Timing and Customisation
Every client’s lashes are different, and their natural thickness and strength affect the processing time. You can reduce the processing time by 1-2 minutes for fine lashes to avoid over-processing. For thick lashes, add 1-2 minutes for full lift saturation if necessary.
Tip: Conduct a patch test and a mini lift trial for first-time clients to see how their lashes react.
Perfecting the Lotion Application
Applying too much or too little lifting solution can impact your lash lift results. Aim for a thin, even layer.
-
Use a microbrush for precision. Avoid contact with the lash tips to prevent over-curling.
-
Start from the base and work your way up, stopping at about 2/3 of the lash length.
Troubleshooting Common Challenges
There are a few culprits causing lash lifts to go wrong.
-
If the lashes have an uneven curl, it’s usually due to inconsistent lash placement or adhesive application. Always space the lashes evenly before using the lifting solution.
-
Leaving the solution on too long results in over-processed lashes. Adjust the process times according to the client’s lash thickness and use a timer to avoid guesswork.
-
If the lashes don’t hold the curl, it’s usually due to insufficient adhesive or not cleansing the lashes properly before the treatment. Thorough cleansing is essential. Also, make sure each lash is fully stuck to the shield.
Aftercare to Maintain the Lash Lift
As a lash tech, it’s your responsibility to educate your clients on how to take care of their lashes. We know they don’t usually like leaving with a long list of rules, but encourage them to follow basic aftercare advice:
-
Avoid water, steam, and makeup for 24 hours.
-
Use the recommended nourishing lash serum to maintain lash health.
-
Don’t rub or pull the lashes.
-
Sleep on your back for the first 48 hours.
If you can convince your clients to take these tips seriously, they can enjoy a long-lasting lash lift.
